How Long Should a Hockey Stick Be? Hockey Stick Length Guide
Share
Hockey stick length affects puck control, reach, shooting leverage, posture and even how stiff a stick feels. There is no single perfect length for every player, but there is a useful starting point.
A common starting point
While standing in skates, many players begin with the top of the stick somewhere around the chin or lower face. From there, personal preference and playing style should decide whether you go shorter or longer.
Why some players prefer a shorter stick
A shorter stick can keep the puck closer to the body and make tight stickhandling feel quicker. Players who operate in small spaces or prefer a lower stance sometimes like this setup.
Why some players prefer a longer stick
A longer stick gives additional reach for poke checks, passing lanes and puck protection. It can also provide more leverage during certain shooting motions. The tradeoff is that it may feel less compact when handling the puck close to the body.
Length changes flex feel
Cutting material from a shaft generally makes the finished stick feel stiffer. Adding an extension generally makes it feel softer. If you already know you will cut several inches from a stick, consider that when selecting flex.
Measure consistently
When comparing custom stick dimensions, use one measuring method every time. Epix custom measurements are based on overall stick length from the floor to the top of the butt end so the requested dimension is clear and repeatable.
Length should work together with flex, lie and curve rather than being selected independently. Read the Epix Hockey Stick Guide for a complete setup overview. To choose your own dimensions, visit our custom hockey stick builder, or browse stock hockey sticks that are ready to order.
