Low Kick vs Hybrid vs Mid Kick Hockey Sticks: Which Is Right for You?
Share
A hockey stick's kick point describes the area of the shaft designed to flex most during a shot. Choosing the right kick point is less about finding a universally better option and more about matching the stick to your release.
Low kick: built around quick release
A low-kick stick flexes closer to the lower portion of the shaft. It generally takes less time and motion to load, which can suit players who shoot quickly in traffic, release the puck close to the body or rely heavily on wrist shots and snapshots.
Mid kick: built around fuller loading
A mid-kick profile flexes higher on the shaft and typically rewards players who put more force through the stick. It can feel natural for shooters who have time to lean into the shaft, take heavier shots or prefer a more traditional loading sensation.
Hybrid kick: versatility between the two
A hybrid profile is designed to bridge quick loading and fuller power. It can be a strong choice for players who take several types of shots and do not want their stick to feel specialized around only one release.
Which kick point should you choose?
Think about where your shots come from. If most of your goals come from fast releases around the circles or net front, low kick deserves consideration. If you generate shots with more time and leverage, a mid kick may feel better. If your game changes shift to shift, hybrid offers a versatile middle ground.
Kick point also works together with flex, length and shooting mechanics. Two players using the same kick point can experience it differently because they load the stick differently.
