Junior vs Intermediate vs Senior Hockey Sticks: What Size Do You Need?

Junior, intermediate and senior hockey sticks are more than labels for age groups. Each category can differ in shaft dimensions, available flexes and overall length, which changes how the stick feels in your hands and loads during a shot.

Junior hockey sticks

Junior sticks are designed around younger and smaller players. They typically pair lower flex ratings with smaller shaft dimensions and shorter overall lengths. The goal is to give developing players a stick they can comfortably grip and flex rather than forcing them into an oversized senior setup.

Intermediate hockey sticks

Intermediate sticks bridge the gap between junior and senior. They are useful for players who need more length and stiffness than a junior stick but do not want the dimensions or flex range of many senior models. Some adult players also prefer intermediate sticks because of their particular height, hand size or flex preference.

Senior hockey sticks

Senior sticks are generally built around adult dimensions and higher flex ranges. They are the standard choice for many older teen and adult players, but height and shooting mechanics matter more than age alone.

Do not choose by age alone

A properly fitted stick should allow you to control the puck comfortably and load the shaft naturally. Cutting a stick shorter generally makes it feel stiffer, while adding an extension changes its effective feel and balance. That means two players of the same age can reasonably choose different stick categories.

Length and flex work together

Stick category should be considered together with length and flex. Read our hockey stick length guide and hockey stick flex guide before choosing. Then explore senior, intermediate and junior Epix hockey sticks.
